The exuberant entertainer Joker Starr returns with his latest offering entitled The Frazer Ali EP. The London based emcee shows his fascination and to boxing, and at times the similarities between physically and lyrical fighting, dedication to the craft and the exhilaration involved in being successful.
With the 3 legendary battles between Joe Frazier and Mohammed Ali as the focus of the project, Joker Starr goes from warm up, to fight, to victory, and captures the energy surrounding contests of this kind.
One thing with concept projects of this nature is that the artist can sometimes pigeon holing their rhymes, and end up having very little to talk about. No doubt the subject matter is interesting, if the subject is of interest to you, but the lyrics at times repeat themselves to a certain degree, purely due to the topic in hand.
Daniel Niles (who worked with joker Starr on his Northborough Estate Project) flawlessly offers up the beats, creating a dusty soulful sound, blending vocal samples from Frazier and Ali. The whole EP has a freestyle vibe, where you can imagine Niles, Joker Starr and Dark Angel (who is the only featured artist, appearing on Body Head and Victory) jamming in the studio, writing concepts and zoning out. Frazier Ali is a winter warmer and a summer hummer, with chilled sounds and tracks flowing from one to the next.
You can hear that Joker Starr is evolving his sound, with various projects in the pipeline, the veteran emcee who has worked with the likes of Micall Parknsun, DJ IQ, TY (Co-production credits on Upwards), Keith Lawrence, Blufoot and many more is an artist who makes music that HE is feeling, which is rare in this time of sound / genre following and money grabbing.
To sum it up, Joker Starr's Frazier Ali EP is a refreshingly different project that offers soulful production with a unique take on lyric writing and presentation. Reviewed by Vice
