SQUID NINJAZ - REVENGE OF THE BLOWFISH REVIEW

You really can’t sleep in this writing gig, or the whole world slips past you without you even realising. Remember the review we did for the Squid Ninjaz single? That was only a couple of weeks ago and at the time no one seemed to know when the album was going to be released.

Then it arrived in the post with a release date of 7 December on the PR blurb, so I thought I’d leave it a little while before getting the review online. Then, more thanks to Twatter than anything else, I saw that it has already been released and we’d completely missed it. Bollocks.

It’s all good though; things coming out earlier can only be a good thing for the artists involved, I guess.. Anyway enough of all that, let’s talk about the arrival of the Ninjaz album, “Revenge of the Blowfish“. ‘More of the same’ is the general idea here and luckily for us, ‘the same’ in this case is some of the tightest & moodiest hip hop to come out of Wales this year.

The album kicks off with what I said might be the biggest posse cut history, with no less than 17 emcees! (Although I did remember the track by Insight called “Seventeen MCs“, in which he does every ‘emcee’ himself… but it’s not a competition. ) Here is the list again in case you missed it last time: Joe Blow, Pergyl, Cesto, Cervantis, Skamma, Ral Duke, Joe Dirt, JDS, Mudmowth, 4Dee, Ruffstylz, Mr Bang On, King Grub, Lee Scott, Bill Shakes, Junior Disprol and Chud Jackson. Fucking good it is too. There are some verses that stand out more - Mudmowth, Ral Duke and Joe Dirt to name a few - but all the cats involved are of a high calibre and the beat is suitably menacing.

A lot of the tunes have that sinister edge to them, helping to create a real brooding atmosphere. This is in pretty stark contrast to the dope Metabeats’ album, “Metaphysical“, that was released in 2007 and featured many of the Ninjaz, but definitely had a happier vibe. This album isn’t dreary by any means, or at least not to the point where it becomes tiresome. If anything, that rawness brings a little something extra to the verses being laced. Other notable tracks include “Mimic“, “Middle Finger Music“, which is a big ‘fuck you’ in the direction of the wack; “Kush115“, which brings possibly the bounciest beat of all to the proceedings; and “RType“, which kinda reminded me of a sort of cross between Dark Circle and early Task Force stuff.

I’m also going to big up the skit, “Blotterz“, cos it uses a Fear and Loathing sample, specifically the scene where Johnny Depp has a vision of Christina Ricci’s character, Lucy, running to the police and telling them they have plied her with acid. Thompson isn’t used nearly enough in sampling, considering the amount of crazy soundbites he left us and so hats off to the Barry boys for bringing him out of the cold (In fact, massive props to Ral Duke for using that name)

As I mentioned at the start of the review, the album is already out and it should be put on all your wishlists. For those out there who thought the pinnacle of Welsh hip hop was Goldie Looking Chain and their half-arsed comedy raps, you have a whole world to discover and this is a damn good place to start. You can grab yourselves a copy from Suspect Packages. Reviewed by Stlye43

2TALL, DJ CLOCKWORK & KPER PRESENT ‘A BOOM BAP CONTINUUM’

A Boom Bap Continuum... ten years of beats from '99 to '09 by ABoomBapContinuum

A HUGE new mix from 2Tall, Clockwork and Kper. Featuring tracks by Pete Rock, The Alchemist, J Dilla, DJ Premier, DJ Nappa, RJD2, Skitz, Prefuse 73, Dabrye, SA-RA, Madlib, Oh No, Flying Lotus, Oddissee and Samiyam.

Words from 2Tall
"A mix of over 250 beats from the past decade from ‘99 to ‘09

For me the intention behind this is simple: to highlight the lineage of hip-hop production and beat making from the turn of the millennium to the present day, and perhaps shed some light on the fairly quiet revolution that has been taking place under the surface of mainstream media in recent years.

With some strange tags being applied to the current standard in beat making, I feel it it is important to shed some light on to this lineage. This is a journey from late 90s crate digging, to the circuit-bent soundscapes of the so called ‘post-dilla’ era.

I hope this music inspires you as much as it has inspired me these past 11 years."

We will also be releasing a 6 track E.P (The War in A Rack Mix tape) featuring both national and international artists. including Verbal Kent, Tumi (Tumi and the Volume) and C4sey (Pentalk).

This completely bespoke date features his core quartet (Femi Temowo - guitar, Karl Rasheed Abel - bass, and Graham Godfrey - drums).

Admission is free for these completely one off gigs! and he will be signing CDs (at £6) at the event.
Moreover! Soweto regularly incorporates jpegs, sent via bluetooth into an improvised freestyle in shows. This performance however
will extend that principle allowing his audience to send in relevant information and pictures weeks in advance, shaping the format of the show.

Since December 2006 when Soweto first blogged on the difficulties of getting his music filed under the correct category in music retailers the landscape of music distribution and the reach of independent artists has completely changed.

The War in A Rack Mixtape will feature new and original material. This will be the first time since A Life in The Day of B19, and the frustrated release of Basement Fables pt2 that Soweto Kinch will present new work. It therefore marks his emergence as an independent artist and signifies his material breaking free both from his record label and an industry fascination with categorising creativity.

METHOD MAN, GHOSTFACE KILLAH & RAEKWON - WU-MASSACRE TRAILER PT. 3

December 22nd did sound a little too good to be true. Apparently the Method Man x Ghostface x Raekwon collabo album has been pushed to February 9th, which is probably for the best anyway. Here is the conclusion of the Rik Cordero directed, Wu-Massacre trailers. "According to David Fincher’s 'Se7en' Deadly Sins, we’ve seen the sin of PRIDE (the high sense of worth for oneself) and SLOTH (spiritual and emotional apathy) and how the Wu deals with such vices. Well now it’s Raekwon’s turn and guess which capital sin pisses him off the most."

GHOST - REMIXES FROM THE EDGE

No More Ghost remix by Ghost
Ghost drops a brand new 10 track remix album and showcases the depth of his production skills across multiple genre's. Ghost once again proves not only is he one of the hardest working producer's out there, he's at the top of his game. “Remixes from the Edge” travels through bassline heavy hip hop into thoughtful moments with a touch of uptempo rock funk. Along the way incorporating a variety of tempos and rhythms to help you ride through the album. “Remixes from the Edge” builds up to the release of Ghost's 2nd Album “Freedom of Thought” through Border Music in March 2010, and will also bridge the gap between “Freedom of Thought” and Ghost's 3rd studio album “Postcards from the Edge” due later in 2010.

LEWIS PARKER - THE PUZZLE EPISODE ONE ALBUM REVIEW

The new Lewis Parker album will drop heavy early 2010 and as the mystery of the Man with the Golden Sound deepens, it may be too soon to put together the jigsaw pieces of his master plan. The latest instalment offers silky smooth hip hop with the creativity of a seasoned veteran. Here we have top notch beats complemented with a vibrant new plot line, laid out in refreshing lyrics from LP himself, alongside Dynas, Tah Born and Steele out of Smiff'n'Wessun.

The starting tracks, 'The Big Game' and 'International Takeover' provide new re-workings of material from a recent EP with refreshing productions and a suped up studio sound. This album marks Lewis Parker's move from London to New York and really binds together his work ethic and attitude to the new environment and opportunities. The results emanate brilliantly from the speakers, lazy yet precise drum loops sink into the deep bass lines and the leading mid-range samples emerge with a clarity and distinction that is reminiscent of, although exceeds, his earlier achievements. This album demonstrates an adept control of the studio process to allow "the deadliest man with three SP's" to build symphonies of sound, and at the same time prove that the World of Dusty Vinyl can put out a classic long player on either side of the atlantic.

'Man Up' follows on the heels of a sizzling intro to the album, with a bass hook with echoes of 2004's 'Give it Here', it contains a complete musical movement in a single track, the epic mood is laid down as a foundation which is steadily built upon throughout the album.

Following on we hear 'Heavy Action', a superb example of how the narratives across the album well suit the beats, verses range from the Wu-style crime capers to the Everyman advice and wisdom that seems to flow naturally from Mr Parker's pen. The English vocab and way of thinking is a big part of LP's background and that remains a key part of the appeal. His sound is a product of ideals that take root anywhere in any hip hop community, using that blend of funk, soul and rare groove to contribute toward a full and balanced sound-scape.

As a rapper he is ever aware of his unique situation, and it shows in lines like: "We're playing to win the game, no regrets, no fears, no tears, no shame...Situations changed, new arrangements arranged, deals with new cats with some new names... Took some time off of course/ to lounge with two broads/ looking like Pam Grier and Lara Croft"

The final three tracks are big hitters, finishing on 'A Deadly Game' with its reverberating bass and brass driven leads, it cuts to the chase by laying down the rules of the games as he sees it, starting with an extended and meditative gong from 'Jungle Boogy' and an intricate set of musical solos throughout the final verse, his sense of structure and pacing pushes the album to an intriguing end, the listener left with questions, and that is how he wants to leave it, as this is part one of a set of albums yet to drop.

While the album has plenty of variation it certainly marks the turning of a corner, adding a few more crowns to a previously pure and Golden sound. Lewis Parker has always prided himself on the quality of his sound, and anyone who's checked the 'Sniper Beats' album will recognise the progression in production that has been a continued transition up to his current release. However it isn't a simple line with ups and downs, his body of work is as diverse as the years he has been in the music game. So with two renowned albums under his belt, his third solo LP project had high expectations that are more than surpassed here, the bar has been raised and The Puzzle is the new peak upon which it rests. Reviewed by J Bodes

BEAT THIS! A HIP HOP HISTORY (1984)

Originally shown as part of the BBC's 'Arena' series in 1984, 'Beat This: a Hip Hop History' is one of the first glimpses into the nascent hip hop culture of the Bronx. Looking at all of the arts of hip hop as practised by such legends as The Cold Crush Brothers, Jazzy Jay, as well as the musical and social revolutionary Afrika Bambaataa and hip hop's godfather DJ Kool Herc. Fontaine's seminal film captures the main progenitors of the scene as it evolves from a tiny street movement into an internationally disseminated culture. 'Beat This: A Hip Hop History' features in-depth interviews as well as footage from Kool Herc's original block parties. This is unmissable breaking, graffiti, rapping and DJing from back in the day, in all its crazy-costumed glory!

GHOST - FREEDOM OF THOUGHT ALBUM REVIEW

Ghost, undoubtedly one of the most underrated UK based Hip Hop producers of our time returns with his second full length LP entitled 'Freedom of Thought'. Recently relocated to New Zealand, this album tells the story of the producers creative and emotional experiences, with every track portraying honesty and passion.

The formidable producer made a reputation for his debut LP 'Seldom Seen Often Heard', and built a strong fan base. Since then, like many true producers it’s been a waiting game, but with 'Freedom Of Thought' you won’t be disappointed.

The project begins with an intro that wouldn’t sound out of place on a DJ Shadow album. With a great vocal sample, you immediately realise what the project is about. As the name suggests, this album is about free thought, not following the crowd and offering originality.

'Return Journey' is a moody and drum heavy track that combines trippy synths with a choral backing, the drumline has the trademark Ghost sound...A powerful yet subtle sound. Midway through, a guitar breaks through to offer a different end for an already dramatic track.

With any track on the album be sure to listen all the way to the end, as no track will end the same. Ghost is not the kind of producer who is content with a fade out effect. Varying drum patterns, additional instruments, second outros, skits and more offer character to the project.

The ever consistent Jehst is the first artist to offer vocals to the project on 'Elevate'. Brimstone appears reflective and humble on the beautiful piano led backdrop with Ghost effortlessly building and breaking down the instrumental where necessary.

Other stand out tracks on the project include:
• 'Frozen In Time' featuring with Verb-T. The poignant track tells a tale of a dwindling relationship in which Verbs conscience is unsure whether to give in or push forward. As with any Verb-T verse you can be sure that it’s heart felt. Ghost comes incredibly strong with a understated guitar track echoing throughout. One thing that is very different with this project to the last is the way that individual artists hold down complete tracks. On Seldom Seen Often Heard many of the feature tracks had 2 or more artists, whereas Freedom Of Though contains a number of tracks which focus on 1 emcee
• 'From The Beginning': Picture Cut Chemist, Exile and Shadow collaborating on a beat and you are left with From The Beginning. This track is flawless. The pianos bounce off the horns, onto the synths and are brought back by the hypnotic drums. The only downside is the length. This track, at only 2 minutes 48 seconds could easily double in time.
• 'Move strong': featuring Dubbledge. For that straight Hip Hop fix this is a jazzy lo-fi track with some great metaphors flowed perfectly over the rough cut beat.

You could find strengths in every track. This is very much personal taste. It’s an understated classic, and definitely Hip Hop for Grown Folks. There isn’t a party tune or head banger in sight, but this is thought provoking and beautifully produced music that effortlessly blends genres. If you want real Hip Hop check Ghost’s Freedom Of Thought. It’s that simple!
