Madlib Medicine Show #7: High Jazz is an all-new Madlib jazz production. High Jazz, the name itself a tribute to the landmark jazz-fusion album released by Stanton Davis’s Ghetto Mysticism in 1976, shows a marked development in Madlib’s craft.
Among the newly released tracks on High Jazz are a Madlib, Karriem Riggins & James Poyser collaboration, the debut of groups Generation Match, The Big Black Foot Band, RMC, and a 15-minute live piece by Yesterdays New Quintet (recorded at a secret show in 2000). The 15-track album runs a total of 61 minutes. Limited edition 3-disc vinyl: Madlib has collected an additional 30 minutes of music for the limited edition vinyl release of High Jazz. LA Weekly’s Jeff Weiss meets up with “underground hip-hop’s most elusive producer” for Madlib’s first US interview since 2006.
Excerpt:
“The equipment doesn’t matter, it’s the vibe you put into it. If music sounds good, music sounds good,” he says, so secure in his gifts that there is only objectivity. It’s a brilliance that defies intellectualization: There is no formula, and attempting to divine causal relationships is futile. You can connect the dots to his immediate lineage, hip-hop producers Pete Rock, DJ Premier and Marley Marl. Or you can plumb deeper to the protean prolificacy of Frank Zappa, David Axelrod, Miles Davis or any of the canonized jazzmen. But they were all intensely collaborative, while Madlib prefers studio solitude. You can even note the inspiration and influences inherited from his close friend and collaborator, J Dilla. But like the ODB, there is no father to his style
Been a huge fan of Yungun aka Essa since back in the daze from tracks like 'City Breaks', 'Slumber' and 'What I See PT1 / PT2'. So, you can imagine how 'Hyped' i was to hear of YG's new 'Sunshine' track taken from his album 'Middleman' which is hopefully set to drop sooner than you can say 'where's Yungun been at?'. He will also be performing at Udderbelly, Southbank on the 1st July alongside Benin City and Inua Ellams. Get them tickets, should be a BIG one.
As I've mentioned on numerous occasions, one of the biggest joys of being able to review music is to discover those gems that often go overlooked. A few weeks back, I had the pleasure of receiving the new album Prolusion Plus from the trio known as Delusionists. I had heard of them before but I had never had the pleasure of hearing their music. After listening to Prolusion Plus, I am convinced that me sleeping on them was definitely “my bad”.
The London based trio consisting of Ben Black, D.B.F. and Slim Pickens showcase a natural and organic chemistry which suggests that their camaraderie extends way beyond the beats and rhymes. On the album opener, they confidently kick in the door on Who's That making sure you know the names and respect the game. If there were any preconceptions of whether these guys could spit or not, the get dispelled with the quickness. On Digital Connects, Ben Black gets selfish and does his solo thing on the blips and bleeps of a funky Jon Phonics instrumental. He demonstrates a real creative flair when he ingeniously incorporates the names of various blogs and websites in the U.K. a la GZA on Labels. It is an impressive display of lyrical linguistics indeed.
The album pumps along nicely with cuts like the Kelakovski produced 12 Letters and Nature's Way allowing the album to remain decidedly consistent. One of the definite highlights is the jazzy and soulful The Evil where the soul is laid bare and honest introspection is brought to the forefront in a way that is very rare in today's boast and brag musical climate.
Ultimately, Prolusion Plus is a release that demands your attention. The biggest quality that Delusionists have is that they possess a knack at making joints that can get the brain moving as well as the heads and the feet. The overall sound of the album is a finely tuned mix of traditional samples and scratches but it has a 2010 spit shine which doesn't make it sound at all dated. Lastly, another element to appreciate is the fact that their musical concepts are deep but not to the point where it goes over the head. Hence there is a high chance that once you listen to this, the first time will not be the last time.
Taking a brief break away from the A.M series after dropping 'To.AM / Free.A.M' , 'Midnight Mathematics' and just before 'For.AM' is released on Berlin based label Project Mooncircle. The obba Supa drop 2 tracks on a 7 inch, the record features, fresh from appearing on the latest Brownswood Bubblers, the amazing talent of Shaunise on 'Too Far Gone' and the mutated saxophone tones on 'Beaks On Faces' by renowned horn man Radimo. This is true Audio Alchemy, the Chakra sound.

On the 13th June, 'Soul Mavericks This' were crowned UK B-Boy champions at the National Qualifiers of the biggest break-dance competition in the world, the 2010 Sony Ericsson B-Boy Championships.
In front of a 1,000 strong crowd, the crew took on some of the country’s best B-Boys and B-Girls from London, Leeds, Manchester, Derby and Edinburgh in a spectacular showdown at the Islington Academy. Soul Mavericks This will now go onto represent Great Britain in the World Finals of the Sony Ericsson B-Boy Championships – in its 15th year – taking place at Brixton Academy in October.
Following a two-month search for the country’s hottest breakdancing talent, the competition has seen over 100 highly skilled B-Boys, poppers and lockers, including competitors as young as 10, showcase their skills.
As UK winners, the Soul Mavericks crew will now go onto challenge the greatest B-Boy squads from around the world in a bid to win the coveted title of World Champions, after Endangered Species from the USA danced their way to glory at the 2009 World Final.
DJ Hooch, founder of the Sony Ericsson B-Boy Championships, said: “The level of talent and skill of some of the crews that competed at this year’s National qualifiers was mind blowing. With more B-Boys and B-Girls taking to the floor, I’d have to say this year’s Sony Ericsson B-Boy Championships is going to be the best yet. The World Championships also opens doors to aspiring breakers and with past contenders going onto perform on the world stage at events like the Oscars, winning is most definitely no mean feat.”

Elevator Hip Hop catches up with Detroit producer/DJ HouseShoes for an interview at ShoesHouse. Talked about new projects, making beats, hip-hop, Dilla and more. . .
Extremely dope experimental project from Inatesounds Crew member Leonard Dstroy. This is most definitely something you'll want to check out if you did Devon Who/Ras-G/Samiyam. "Higher Vibrations" also sports a couple features from Reggie B. Be sure to pay attention to "Bubblin Hot" and "Hello Darling" if you still need persuading!
New beat tape from one of B.Lewis' good friends/"Alora" bretheren Insightful. The beat tape is full of spaced-out sounds paird with funky, loose drum loops much like B. Lewis' "Talking Chairs" beat tape. Insightful is definitely someone you want to keep tabs on, I believe he's just getting started. Visit his Bandcamp site and download the beat tape for free! "Blue Again" is my pesonal favorite, sick beat! Could "Alora" be the US equivalent of "Slumgullion"???.

MF DOOM - OPERATION DOOMSDAY OFFICIAL REISSUE COMING IN 2010
Myke Forte featured on The New School Beat Tape as one of 10 producers to look out for in 2010. Now he is back with his next instalment in his Zodiac Beat Tape series. He is now 4 releases deep in what is set out to be an onslaught of head nodding and neck spasms. Grab the download and catch up with the series if you have missed out.
'Hypedog's Underdogs' is a producer spotlight series that will give some dope, but lesser known talent a chance to shine.
For the first instalment of this new series we have Kaze. Kaze first got started crafting beats about two years ago on his friends and brothers equipment. Now that he has his own gear he wants to take thing more seriously. Being influenced by MF DOOM, Daft Punk, Nujabes[rip], j dilla[rip], Nottz,"YH" from da zombeez and more it explains why Kaze has an unpredictable sound.
Using a number of different but similar snares and kicks in a beat, his beats will definitely hold lots of replay value for people like myself who like to pick apart a beats intricacies. Be on the lookout for his beat tape 'Kreation', dropping later this summer!
In the cold harsh winter of 2002 UK producer Mark B was approached by BBC's Radio One team do a short documentary based around the art & knowledge of record collecting from a Hiphop perspective. Already aware of the global coverage & support of Radio One with the success of the Mark B & Blade Unknown LP (2000) he jumped at the opportunity to take a break from the studio & touring to further his skills & learn the art of producing a radio documentary.
After a few shorts meetings with their team Mark bounced a few ideas off of them & took the challenge one step further by expanding an already well covered theme to the heart of New York City to investigate the story behind one of Hiphop's most recognizable & biggest ever hits both on the streets, radio & MTV audiences alike. No matter what music you listen to underground or commercial, rock pop, house techno or reggae it’s more than likely you will know the song in question but it's very doubtful you will actually know the true story behind this song or its original source.
Straight from the rotten apple Mark B exposes the dirty dealings of break trading, record producing, record diggin’ & the origins of an LP sold to over 20 different producers before falling into the hands of Dr Dre & Melman.
With the help & interviews from the legendary DJ Marley Marl, VIC, Dilated Peoples, Bubba Sparxxx, DJ Greenpeace, David Holmes, Tommy Koi of Mr Bongo Records, Andrew Mason of Wax Poetics & Jared from The Sound Library Record Store this is one documentary you don't want to miss.
This is strictly for promotional purposes only & is a free download. This download will only be available for 1 week. Please spread the word if you like it.

BTS Radio: Manic when it comes to new creation, I was handed three CDs with over 150 beats the first time I met Paul White. His output has been at dizzying levels for years, it's hard to imagine the number of archives he's stored away.White is hip-hop through and through. He respects the art and captures the elements of what you loved about the genre from the start. His sample sources lean towards psychedelics, experimental jazz and rock, giving it a more distinct sound than most hip-hop beat makers. His latest project, "Paul White and The Purple Brain", is an album made up entirely from work of little-known Swedish psych-rock guru S.T. Mikael. The combination goes hand in hand and where White is most comfortable creatively. Taking drug-fueled sound and rinsing it through the MPC. Paul White's "Paul White and The Purple Brain" is out now on Now-Again/One-Handed Music.
